A century of thrills and spills is being celebrated at Wicksteed Park tomorrow, 2 April 2026, as the UK’s oldest ride of its kind officially reaches its 100th birthday.
The iconic Water Chute, a pioneer of the modern log flume, was the brainchild of Charles Wicksteed - the man credited with inventing the swings and slides we see in playgrounds today. Built in 1926, the ride remains one of the oldest surviving water attractions in the world and continues to offer the same authentic experience to riders a century later.
A Living Piece of Theme Park History
The ride’s historical importance is so significant that it holds Grade II-listed status from Historic England. While the flat-bottomed boat used today is a modern replica, it stays true to the original design. Passengers are winched up before sliding down the chute, hitting the water with a signature splash before being pulled back to the platform.
Kelly Richardson, Director of Wicksteed Park, commented:
"We are extremely proud of the Water Chute and its amazing history and heritage. It is a unique ride which means so much to so many people... Like so many of the rides and attractions on the park, it was a forerunner for theme parks and playgrounds around the world."
The Water Chute’s enduring appeal was further cemented in 2022 when it was named Best Historic Ride in the UK Theme Park Awards.
